Sponsor me

There are plenty of ways you can get fitter, boost your wellbeing and help animals at the same time and one of those is doing something for which people sponsor you.

The first thing people tend to think of when considering doing anything for sponsorship is events such as the London Marathon, and 26 gruelling miles of what looks like torture.  But there’s plenty you can do if you are a beginner, starting with a couple of miles or kilometres, and building up.  The important thing is to do what’s right for you and your body, and this is where consulting your GP before you do anything else is important.

Ideas for sponsored events
  • Walk (any distance, anywhere)
  • Run (any distance, anywhere)
  • Ride (horses or bicycles)
  • Rubbish collection from the countryside – you could be sponsored per bag of rubbish
  • Number of plastic bottles collected from the street or country lanes
  • Skateboarding
  • Swim
  • Sport e.g. tennis
  • Trek
  • Car wash
  • Dog walking (not all necessarily with the same dog)
  • Camel rides
  • Dog sleds
  • Wheelchair run
  • Game, such as basketball, netball, football, where you have a good number of players who keen switching in and out
  • Building sandcastles

There are also those which may involve a change in your lifestyle, such as:
  • Weight Change (loss or gain)
  • Give up alcohol
  • Give something up e.g. biscuits, cakes, chocolate, cigarettes
  • Hours contributed to a charity
  • Silence – actually a great time for reflection

There’s also what sounds like the wilder side of sponsorship:
  • A parachute jump
  • Abseil
  • Mountain climb
  • Trekking in a country far away from your own
  • Camping out far away
Want to lose weight?  Why not get sponsorship for the pounds you lose, and give that money to an animal charity?

East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service's (WRAS) sponsored slim ended this week with Trevor Weeks loosing 13.8lbs now weighing 211.6lbs and Bill Pike loosing an amazing 37lbs now weighing 233lbs.

Trevor Week, Founder of WRAS, said of his sponsored slim: "This has been one of the hardest challenges I have had to do, never mind rescuing whales, swimming after swans and rugby tackling deer, they're easy, but loosing weight thats been hard."

"We are hoping to start collecting the money soon but as WRAS is so low on funds at the moment we are urging everyone to make a donation."

The WRAS really needs funds right now - they have had to use a year's worth of funding in seven months to deal with 2,300 cases, so they've had to impose restrictions on the cases they deal with.  You can helpby making a donation on-line at www.wildlifeambulance.org

Some sites which may be helpful in setting up any form of sponsored event are:
  • Just Giving, which enables you to have your own site and choose any charity you want.
  • Sponsor Me, which gives you the option to set up a sponsorship form (This is an Australian based site)
  • Classic Tours, which has a number of challenges for animal lovers and works to set up opportunities with charities
  • Many charities will invite members of the public to represent them in the bigger events, such as the London Marathon

Talk to the charity you intend to help - they may be able to provide you with publicitiy materials.

Travel Far!

You don't have to stick to your home land.  Why not really get adventurous and explore further afield?  Many adventures can be done within the time you can take off at work and the time you put to getting yourself in shape for the event can be fitted into your lifestyle, if what you’re doing and the reason you’re doing it is important enough to you.

Again, talk to your GP if you are considering anything involving altitude in case you could be affected by altitude sickness.

Health and Safety

If you are involving animals in your sponsored activities, please consider their welfare and safety, as well as your own.

Do a risk assessment for each activity, especially if others are involved.

·         What are the risks in your proposed activity?

·         How can you work to minimise those.

·         Write it down to show what you’ve done to minimise the risks

Doing a sponsored event is a great way to:
  1. Help animals by raising money
  2. Raise awareness of the plight of animals and the charity which works to help them
  3. Boost your own fitness and wellbeing
  4. Get motivated to exercise
  5. Feel as though you've really achieved something
  6. Start off slowly and build up your stamina and strenght at a pace to suit you.
  7. Do something whatever age you are and fitness abilities you have
  8. Feel GREAT!
